Odido Revolutionizes North Sea Connectivity with Roam Like at Home
Dutch telecommunications provider Odido has announced a groundbreaking partnership with maritime network specialist Tampnet to launch Europe's largest integrated offshore mobile network. The new service, called Odido@Sea, will enable customers to use their mobile phones on the North Sea under the same 'Roam Like at Home' conditions they enjoy across Europe.
Ending High Costs for Offshore Communication
Starting January 1, 2026, Odido customers will no longer face exorbitant roaming charges when working or traveling in North Sea waters. The network covers approximately 300,000 square kilometers, including international waters of the United Kingdom, Germany, Denmark, and Norway. This represents a significant breakthrough for offshore workers, sailors, and maritime travelers who previously had to rely on expensive satellite services or pay premium roaming rates.
"At Odido, we believe everyone should be able to stay connected, even at open sea. Today, if you take a boat to England, you risk paying exorbitant rates for mobile calls and data," says Gero Niemeyer, CFO at Odido.
Technical Integration and Future Expansion
The partnership fully integrates Tampnet's existing offshore infrastructure with Odido's mobile network, creating a seamless connectivity solution. The network will support advanced mobile services including private 5G networks, edge computing, and network slicing capabilities for business users. Future expansions beyond the North Sea are already planned, with the network gradually being activated throughout 2026 for international users.
"This partnership means that offshore workers can finally stay connected without worrying about high roaming costs. For people working weeks at sea, being able to use their phones like at home is more than convenience, it's quality of life," explains Elie Hanna, CEO of Tampnet.
Broader Implications for Maritime Industry
The Odido@Sea initiative opens new possibilities for maritime operations, including drone deployment for monitoring ships and wind farms, improved push-to-talk services, and enhanced communication for offshore platforms. The service will be available to all Odido customers, including those with Ben and Simpel subscriptions, with international users gaining access later in 2026.
