National Grid Launches Innovative Demand Response Pilot
National Grid has unveiled a groundbreaking pilot program that pays consumers up to $250 to reduce natural gas usage during peak winter days. The Gas Demand Response Hybrid Heating Pilot targets households with mini-split heat pumps, encouraging them to supplement their gas heating systems during periods of high demand.
How the Program Works
Selected participants will receive a Wi-Fi controller valued at $119 that automatically activates their mini-split heat pumps when natural gas demand spikes. This electric heating supplement runs for up to 4 hours during the coldest days of winter. Participants also get a meter reading device to track gas consumption.
The incentive structure includes:
- $100 upfront gift card for enrollment
- $150 bonus after completing the winter season
- Annual $250 incentives for subsequent winters
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, households must have both an operational mini-split heat pump not currently used in winter and a natural gas heating system. Applicants need reliable Wi-Fi and must agree to install monitoring equipment by October 31, 2025. The program is limited to the Northeastern US service area.
Demand Response Explained
Demand response programs help utilities manage peak loads without activating additional power plants. According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, these initiatives modify consumption patterns through price signals or incentives. National Grid's approach uniquely combines gas and electric systems.
"This pilot creates a path to a clean energy future while maintaining reliability," stated a National Grid representative. The company aims to reduce strain on infrastructure during extreme cold snaps when gas demand can overwhelm supply systems.
Application Details
Interested customers must apply by September 15, 2025, through National Grid's dedicated portal. Participants will be selected on a first-come basis, with installations completed before the 2025-26 winter season.
