Vlaams Belang Council Member Arrested in Major Healthcare Fraud

Vlaams Belang council member Stefanie Sander arrested for alleged healthcare fraud involving fake patient services. Authorities seized 17 luxury cars and assets worth millions.

Belgian Politician Faces Healthcare Fraud Charges

A municipal council member for the Vlaams Belang party in Belgium has been arrested on suspicion of orchestrating a major healthcare fraud scheme that potentially cost taxpayers millions of euros. Stefanie Sander, a self-employed home care nurse and council member in Houthulst, West Flanders, was taken into custody along with her partner, mother, and an employee during coordinated raids on Tuesday.

Luxury Assets Seized in Investigation

During the extensive house searches in Houthulst and surrounding areas, authorities seized seventeen luxury vehicles, various luxury goods, substantial amounts of cash, and multiple real estate properties. The scale of the confiscated assets immediately raised eyebrows about the scope of the alleged fraud operation.

The investigation focuses on Sander's activities as a self-employed home care nurse, where she allegedly billed the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (RIZIV) for services that were never actually performed. 'We noticed that an unusually high number of services were being billed to the health insurance fund,' said labor auditor Filiep De Ketelaere, who is leading the investigation. 'The volume was so significant that it raised questions about whether one person could realistically perform all these services.'

Systematic Fraud Uncovered

According to Belgian media reports, the fraud scheme involved billing for non-existent patient visits, with some patients reportedly falling under arrangements where they paid little to nothing for services, meaning reimbursements went directly to the nurse. The RIZIV, which processes and pays healthcare provider claims through health insurance funds, detected irregularities that triggered the investigation.

The Public Prosecutor's office emphasized the broader implications of such fraud. 'These practices undermine our social security system,' a spokesperson stated. 'The state comes under additional pressure as a result. It's crucial that we address these malpractices.' The suspected financial damage could reach into the millions of euros, though exact figures are still being calculated.

Political Fallout for Vlaams Belang

The case has significant political implications for Vlaams Belang, a Flemish nationalist party that has been working to improve its public image. Fellow council member Elias Brodeoux told HLN: 'We have confidence that the investigation will be conducted discreetly and objectively. We're waiting to see what the investigation reveals.'

Vlaams Belang has reportedly suspended Sander from her party functions pending the outcome of the judicial investigation. The party has distanced itself from the alleged actions, emphasizing that social fraud is unacceptable.

Ongoing Investigation

Sander and her partner were scheduled to appear before an investigating magistrate on Wednesday, who will determine whether they remain in custody. The investigation continues as authorities work to establish the full extent of the fraud and identify any additional participants.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about healthcare fraud in Belgium's system and raises questions about oversight mechanisms within the RIZIV payment structure. The investigation represents one of the larger healthcare fraud cases uncovered in recent Belgian history, particularly given the political dimension involving an elected official from a prominent political party.
