Tragic Lisbon Cable Car Accident Claims 16 Lives
Portuguese authorities have completed the identification process for all sixteen victims of the devastating cable tram accident that occurred in Lisbon on September 3, 2025. The victims include five Portuguese nationals and eleven foreign tourists from multiple countries.
International Victims Identified
Among the foreign victims were three British citizens, two South Koreans, and two Canadians. Additional victims came from Switzerland, Ukraine, France, and the United States. Portuguese police expect to publish preliminary findings today regarding the cause of the tragic derailment. A comprehensive investigation report is scheduled to be completed within 45 days. Survivor Found Alive
In a remarkable development, a German citizen initially reported among the deceased was later found alive in a local hospital. Authorities have not yet explained how this identification error occurred amidst the chaos of the rescue operation.
The Lisbon cable tram system, known for its vintage cars and steep hill routes through the Alfama district, has operated since the late 19th century. This incident represents the deadliest accident in the system's history.
