WhatsApp Introduces Ads Despite Earlier Promise to Remain Ad-Free
WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, is set to introduce advertisements in its app. These ads will appear in the updates tab, where users currently see status updates from their contacts. The ads will not appear in chat conversations, ensuring that the core messaging experience remains unchanged.
Ads in the Updates Tab
The updates tab, which allows users to share photos and messages visible for 24 hours (similar to Instagram and Facebook Stories), will now include ads from businesses and organizations. Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, has confirmed that the ads will roll out globally in the coming months, though a specific date for their introduction in the Netherlands remains unclear.
Breaking a Promise
This move contradicts a 2014 promise made by WhatsApp, which assured users that the app would remain ad-free. At the time, WhatsApp emphasized its commitment to providing a platform for personal communication without interruptions from ads or spam. However, after Meta (then Facebook) acquired WhatsApp for nearly $22 billion, the company shifted its strategy to monetize the platform.
Privacy Concerns Addressed
Meta has clarified that the ads will not be based on the content of users' private chats, as WhatsApp employs end-to-end encryption to protect conversations. Instead, ads will be targeted using "limited information" such as the user's country, language, or the channels they follow in the updates tab. For example, users who follow football clubs might see ads related to sports.
Meta also assured users that their phone numbers will not be shared or sold to advertisers.
