Annalena Baerbock has been elected as the new president of the United Nations General Assembly. Her election came as no surprise, as the former German Foreign Minister was the only candidate.
As the new president, Baerbock will chair the meetings of the United Nations and the UN Security Council in New York for one year. Until today, Philémon Yang from Cameroon was the chair.
Baerbock (44) was the Foreign Minister in the German government of Chancellor Scholz until last month. In the last elections, the Greens, Baerbock's party, suffered a defeat.
The presidency is assigned to a regional bloc in rotation, and this time it was the Western bloc's turn. This is the eightieth time a new president has been elected.
