The cause of the crash is still unknown. According to the Rheinische Post, an eyewitness reported seeing a small sports plane flying low with unusually loud engine noise shortly before the accident.

The incident occurred in Korschenbroich, near Mönchengladbach, just a few dozen kilometers from the Dutch border.
