Elon Musk has criticized a legislative proposal by US President Donald Trump. Musk, the world's richest person, was a key ally during Trump's election campaign and his early months in the White House, but their relationship appears to have cooled recently.
In an interview with CBS News, Musk expressed disappointment in Trump's proposal, which the president calls the 'great beautiful law.' The plan aims to extend and establish tax cuts. According to calculations by the nonpartisan US budget office, the national debt could rise by $3.8 trillion to a total of $36.2 trillion.
Musk stated that the law contradicts the work he has done for the government. He led Doge, a division advising the government on budget cuts and downsizing. Musk said increasing the national debt undermines Doge's efforts.
'I think a law can be great or beautiful,' Musk said. 'But I don’t know if it can be both. That’s my personal opinion.'
The bill was approved last week by the House of Representatives and awaits Senate review. Musk announced last month he would step back from Doge to focus on his businesses.
